Radio minute: An attack on faith

Our ability to worship and believe without fear of state persecution is part of what makes this country great. Just weeks before Christmas, Canadians’ religious freedom is under threat. Liberal and Bloc amendments to Bill C-9 will expose people of faith to criminal prosecution for simply quoting their own sacred texts.

Using harmful symbols is already banned in our Criminal Code. Intimidation and mischief at places of worship are already crimes. Hate is already an aggravating factor in criminal sentencing. Our Criminal Code already has laws the Liberal government has ignored, seeking instead to claim the power to approve which beliefs or sacred texts are acceptable.

Religious expression is constitutionally guaranteed and imperative for protecting sincerely-held beliefs. Faith leaders are writing the Prime Minister, expressing their concerns about the removal of the religious freedom exemption from the Criminal Code. They know it will not make Canadians safer, and certainly not protect any people – of any faith – from hate.
