Radio minute: Brian’s Bill
March 18, 2026
Imagine being forced to relive the worst day of your life—not once, but every single year.
In 2012, three innocent lives were taken in a brutal act of violence at the University of Alberta. Brian Ilesic—a son, a colleague, and young man, was one of those murdered.
Right now, families of murder victims are forced to relive their trauma year after year as offenders can apply annually for parole. That is not compassion or justice—it is re-traumatization.
That’s why I’m pleased to support C-243, “Brian’s Bill,” introduced by my colleague, Kerry Diotte. It would implement a simple change to ensure that after an initial parole hearing, offenders would have wait five years before reapplying, maintaining accountability while also recognizing the profound grief impacting victims’ families.
The bill has broad support—from police associations, victims’ advocates, and Canadians across the country. I urge you to express yours by signing the petition at kerrydiotte.com.
Let’s stand with families who deserve the time and space to heal.
